A New Era Is Taking Shape At The Sands Hokianga
10 AUG. 2026 · Updates
Something special is taking shape on the shores of the Hokianga Harbour.
Over the past year, The Sands Hokianga has been undergoing a considered transformation — designed to make it an even more beautiful place to stay, dine, gather, unwind and connect with this extraordinary part of Te Tai Tokerau Northland.
Our accommodation transformation is now complete, and this August we have begun the next exciting stage: creating new harbourfront dining and wellbeing spaces.
There is still work happening behind the scenes, but with every stage we are getting closer to sharing the next chapter of The Sands.
BEAUTIFUL NEW SPACES TO STAY.
Our accommodation transformation is now complete, with our beachfront rooms, two-bedroom accommodation and courtyard rooms refreshed and redesigned to offer greater comfort while keeping the Hokianga landscape firmly at the heart of the experience.
Our Luxury Villas also offer an inviting place to retreat, with private spa pools and fireplaces creating a particularly special escape through the cooler months.
Whether you are visiting for a weekend away, travelling with whānau or extending your journey through Northland, there are now even more ways to make yourself at home beside the harbour.
NEXT: A NEW HARBOURFRONT DINING EXPERIENCE.
This August, work began on one of the most exciting stages of our transformation — the redevelopment of our outdoor dining areas overlooking the Hokianga Harbour.
The new space is being designed to create a stronger connection between our restaurant, beachfront lawn and the harbour beyond, with beautiful new areas to dine, gather and enjoy the view in all weather, throughout the year.
From breakfast overlooking the harbour to long lunches, sunset drinks and dinner as the light changes across the water, the new spaces will allow guests to experience this remarkable setting whatever the season brings.
Our restaurant remains open for breakfast and dinner throughout the works, and we look forward to unveiling the transformed harbourfront dining experience later this year.
A SPACE TO RESTORE.
Alongside our dining transformation, a new beachfront wellbeing space is also taking shape.
Designed as a place to slow down, restore and reconnect, the new experience will feature an infrared sauna and two ice baths, set beside the Hokianga Harbour.
Whether used as part of a morning reset, a post-adventure recovery ritual or simply a moment to pause during your stay, the space will offer guests a new way to experience wellbeing in this extraordinary setting.
It will also become an important part of our growing wellbeing and retreat offering at The Sands.
MORE WAYS TO GATHER.
The transformation is about more than accommodation.
Our function and gathering spaces continue to evolve, giving groups, retreats, celebrations and business events the opportunity to meet, dine and spend time together beside the harbour.
From our indoor event spaces to the beachfront lawn and forthcoming outdoor dining areas, The Sands is becoming a destination where the day can move naturally between meeting, eating, exploring and unwinding.
And We’re Not Finished Yet…
The next chapter of The Sands is about creating more reasons to stay a little longer and experience more of Hokianga.
As our transformation continues through 2026, we will be sharing more of what is coming — including our new wellbeing experience and further ways to explore and experience the harbour.
We are incredibly excited about what is taking shape and look forward to welcoming guests — both old friends and new — to experience the evolving Sands Hokianga.
The view hasn’t changed. But the way you experience it is about to.
